Segal Design Institute
Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, Northwestern University
Editor, writer, and project manager, 2009A newly created center on campus devoted to the developing fields of designing thinking and human-centered design needed a brochure introducing itself to the campus and local, national, and international design communities.Such a publication must itself be a strong, consequential expression of the best in contemporary design; a publication for a design think tank must itself be a compelling example of design thinking. In every detail — writing, organization, typography, color palette, art direction, and photo selection — this brochure aimed to give first and lasting expression to the values of the Segal Design Institute and to provide a visual and verbal language with which it could further its goals. The sophisticated tone and rational approach of brochure were enthusiastically endorsed by the institute, which quickly adopted them for its web site and other publications. Interest in the program and the brochure led to a reprint just six months after the initial run.
